Top Ten Flies April 2021

Two patterns are joint first this month, both have seen surges due to different reasons.

The Pearly Daddy is now back in stock after shortages in the early season. More people are taking up the sport, and using the excuse of fishing to ease some lockdown madness! Higher demand has made shortages in many patterns; but as soon as popular patterns such as this arrive, fisherman who have placed alerts on the pattern are eager to make sure this is stocked in their flyboxes for the season.

The Apaches however is the opposite story; as many are aware, we have had to temporary cease production of the Apache range due to mink shortages because of culling in farms; it turns out they were spreading and mutating the virus. We are now out of stock on our whole Apache range, but do have some Seconds available which do not meet our quality standards (yet people are still eager to keep spares in their box despite this!)

Excitingly a new pattern has launched straight into 3rd position, the Black Halo Fritz Damsel. This was a special request, and has proved popular amongst the damsels. We will be tying more stock, so if you are not lucky enough to grab some, let us know by registering your interest.

Hamill's Killer is another favourite recently restocked and jumped into 4th position; it is popular in the spring and originally a pattern from New Zealand, but it is a great fly fished all over the world.

Parachutes and Klinkhammers popularity grows in April and May as flies start to emerge. Parachutes sit on top of the surface film, imitating flies which have been blown in or having been spent after mating, while the Klinkhammer's thorax pierces the surface film and imitating an emerger with great visibility from all around.

Request a fly, size or option

We work closely with our fly tyers and can tie most patterns to order: a different hook size, barbless instead of barbed, a tungsten bead instead of a gold head; just ask.

Sending a request is free and you are not committing to buy. Depending on where we are in our tying cycle it can take a month or two for a pattern to arrive, and we may not be able to tie every request (fair usage applies); but if we can, we will.

Sign in first and we'll pre-fill your email and keep the request with your account.
